A few books I have read in the past months which I wholeheartedly recommend even if I do not manage to review them properly.
It simply remains the source code of anything written and read on this funny little continent. Therefore, the Odyssey and the Illiad should be read every now and then, over and over again, to calibrate any thoughts re-appearing 2.700 years later. It would be a waste of time to point out the manifold references, examples, curses, praises, similes and words this text provides as the list would be gargantuan. Just this: What sets Homer’s epics apart from collections of other approximately contemporary ethical codes like the Pentateuch, is that the values defining and describing human interaction are not decreed by indisputable deities but fought over by inconsistent and ambivalent humans like Odysseus, Agamemnon and Achilleus. These texts describe and at the same time induce the awakening of the human being as an autonomous entity – with all its blessings and its flaws.

Das mag jetzt wirklich eigenartig erscheinen. Aber Klügers Biographie ist nicht nur bewegend, eindringlich, frei von Pathos und unbarmherzig gegenüber der Blödheit – sie ist auch einfach lustig, manchmal bis an den Rand der Blödelei.

One confession of Ruth Klüger is that she enjoys crime fiction. I wonder if she would agree with Ian Rankin’s resurrection of Inspector Rebus. And I wonder who found it harder to put up without him, the publisher, the audience or the writer himself. Of course, Rebus would not give a damn. Not a bad book, maybe stretching it a bit at the end. On the other hand, by the end of the book I knew the A9 like the back of my hand which will come helpful should I one day want to navigate the Scottish Highlands.

Ein Guter, in jeder Beziehung. Und weil ich mich gerade ein bißchen mit der Schule beschäftige, ist mir prompt dies aufgefallen: Meyerhoff erwähnt die Schule in Deutschland nur als soziales Erkennungszeichen: Als er seine spätere Freundin am Badeteich kennenlernt, ordnen sie einander über die unterschiedlichen Schultypen zu, die sie besuchen – er das Gymnasium, sie die Realschule – und erklären sich so, warum sie, obwohl gleichaltrig, einander in der Kleinstadt bis dahin nicht kennen gelernt haben. Auf Austausch in den USA aber schwärmt Mayerhoff im Detail von den Lehrern der High School in Wyoming, die keineswegs durch die Bank pädagogische Talente sind, aber allemal Typen, die ihre Schüler mögen und ihnen ermöglichen, das beste aus sich herauszuholen: sich selbst.
